Braidwood, Illinois
A Route 66 Town with Heart
“Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” filmed a number of scenes at the Braidwood motel.
Created in Braidwood in 1881, the hard, brown candy was named after a mine shaft where an accident occurred.
A company started by miners in 1873 became a national company that exported bottles throughout the Midwest.
Braidwood was incorporated in 1865 and quickly became a coal mining town due to the abundance of coal deposits. Braidwood has several large lakes that were once strip mines and vacant mine shafts are still discovered today.
