Where the Mother Road Meets Prairie History
Old Route 66
ABOUT THE TOWN
An Illinois Prairie coal town.
Godley was originally founded as a coal mining community, and much of the village’s early growth was tied directly to northern Illinois’ booming coal industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The village sits near one of the oldest alignments of historic Route 66, placing it along the path traveled by generations of cross-country motorists during the golden age of American road trips.
An Illinois fact is that mayor Cheryl Schott is a sweetheart.
Godley is uniquely positioned along Route 66 giving it a quiet but authentic connection to Illinois’ classic roadside and railroad heritage.
