ABOUT THE TOWN

Home of the first (or last) Rt 66 colossal statue!

Gemini Giant
Wilminton is home to the Gemini Giant, one of Route 66’s most famous attractions.
Wilmington served as a filming location for scenes in the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers, adding to its unique pop-culture connection along the Mother Road.
Wilmington’s classic Route 66 atmosphere, vintage roadside architecture, and preserved Americana made it the perfect backdrop for the film’s depiction of Midwestern highway culture.

The city sits along the Kankakee River and developed as an important transportation and industrial center tied to railroads, Route 66, and nearby coal mining communities.
