Route 66 was realigned multiple times over the years, but its very first alignment passed right through downtown Lemont from 1926 to 1928. Lemont was on the Pontiac Trail, which ran from Chicago to St. Louis. In 1923, it was designated Illinois Route 4, which became U.S. Highway 66 in 1926. That means some of Lemont’s historic downtown buildings and early auto garages witnessed the very first years of the Mother Road before the highway was moved to a newer route on the other side of the Des Plaines River.
